At The Moon Room, clean beauty is about care in every sense. We use thoughtfully selected products that are safe, effective, and free from ingredients associated with hormone disruption, cancer risk, or unnecessary irritation. We also consider the bigger picture — prioritizing ethically sourced, cruelty-free, and non-animal-derived ingredients whenever possible, along with renewable and biodegradable materials that are kinder to the environment. Every ingredient should serve a real purpose.

But clean should still feel indulgent. We believe beauty should be luxurious, high-performing, and confidence-boosting — whether it’s your everyday haircare, glowing skincare, or a finishing touch that makes you feel your best. With today’s advancements, there’s no need to compromise —
you can have results, experience, and peace of mind all at once.

What are Clean Products?

F.A.Q’s

    • Transparent ingredient lists: Brands clearly list all ingredients using common names, not vague terms like "fragrance" or "active blend."

    • Avoidance of known harmful chemicals: Clean products exclude ingredients linked to health or environmental concerns (examples below).

    • Safer alternatives: Clean brands use safer, well-researched substitutes that deliver the same benefits (plant-derived surfactants, naturally derived preservatives, biodegradable emulsifiers).

    • Minimal, thoughtful formulations: Fewer, purposeful ingredients that do the job without unnecessary additives.

    • Responsible sourcing & manufacturing: Ethically sourced botanicals, cruelty-free testing, lower-waste packaging, and reduced carbon footprint.

    • Third-party standards or testing: Certifications, clean beauty lists, or lab testing for contaminants add credibility.

    • Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butyl-, ethyl-): linked to hormone disruption.

    • Phthalates (often hidden in "fragrance"): linked to reproductive and developmental concerns.

    • Formaldehyde-releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15): potential carcinogens and sensitizers.

    • Sulfates in aggressive concentrations (SLS, SLES): can strip hair/skin and irritate.

    • Triclosan and triclocarban: antimicrobial chemicals with environmental persistence.

    • Synthetic fragrances and unnecessary allergens: often obscured and can cause irritation.

    • PEGs and certain silicones when contaminated or non-biodegradable.

    • Oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens (reef-impacting).

  • Haircare: shampoos, conditioners, styling products formulated without harsh sulfates, unnecessary silicones, and questionable preservatives.

Skin care: cleansers, serums, moisturizers with non-irritating actives, responsible preservatives, and clear labeling.

Makeup: pigmented, long-wear formulas using safer pigments, binders, and preservatives.

Body care: deodorants, lotions, and washes that avoid aluminum salts, harsh fragrances, and harmful antimicrobials.

    • Read full ingredient lists; prefer familiar, pronounceable names.

    • Look for reputable certifications or third-party testing where possible.

    • Research brands’ transparency about sourcing, testing, and packaging.

    • Patch-test new products.

    • Prioritize products based on exposure: daily-use items (deodorant, moisturizer, lipstick) matter most!

  • "Natural" equals "clean": Not always. Natural ingredients can be allergenic or environmentally harmful; clean focuses on safety, transparency, and sustainability, not just origin.

Clean means less effective: Modern clean formulations can be technologically advanced and perform as well or better than conventional products.

Clean is regulated: There's no single universal legal definition; standards vary by brand, certifier, and region. Vet companies on transparency and science.

  • Health:
Reduces chronic exposure to potentially harmful chemicals over time.

    Environment
Lowers pollution, supports biodiversity, and encourages sustainable sourcing.

    Ethics
Supports cruelty-free practices and fair sourcing.

Clean beauty is often talked about, but not always clearly defined. To us, it simply means choosing products made without ingredients known or suspected to negatively impact human health — and creating a space where you never have to choose between results and wellbeing.

Client Testimonials

“BEST LASH EXTENSIONS IN PETALUMA. I have been going to Tila for Xtreme brand eyelash extensions for months now and I am so happy with my lashes. Tila pays very close attention to detail and has a very steady hand. The eyelash placement is impeccably gorgeous every time! I get the volume lashes in cat-eye style. I have sensitive eyes and value natural makeup products -- I love that the Moon Room specializes in non-toxic, organic and natural hair care, waxing, and lashes. The brand of lashes they use are medical grade, created by a nurse, and both Tila and Desiree are certified trainers for Xtreme Lashes; they are so good that they train other lash artists. You definitely want to book your next appointment at least 10 days ahead of time because they book out quick! I get a fill every two weeks so I just book at the end of each appt. Thank you, Tila, you're amazing!”

“April is absolutely amazing, and I cannot recommend her enough! She is a brilliant colorist and stylist, and intuitively knew what I was looking for from our first appointment when I wasn't sure of what I wanted- I'm so happy with my hair for the first time in ages. In addition to her talents, April is a wonderful person in general and I always look forward to catching up with her at our appointments. Also, The Moon Room is an absolute gem of a space with a great vibe!”
